Record rain fall continues to pound a large portion of the country making this the most difficult year for fly flishing since I first began the sport. I did manage to fit some time in last weekend on the upper Genesee River but higher than normal flows and a sporadic Hendrickson hatch created very little dry fly action. I did manage a couple wild brook trout on one of the river's tribs. I then gave a presentation to the Upper Genesee Chapter of TU, a dedicated Group that is very active in the managment of Allegheny County trout streams. Mid week I fished the Maitland River in Ontario with friend Larry Halyk and guide Mike Verhoef. The fishing was a bit slow but we hooked a few steelhead and fished a gorgeous river. Mike is an outstanding guide and Spey caster and knows his rivers very well. See his site at www.flyfitters.ca
After one of the most rainy and cool months of April on record, May has not started much better. It has been a challenge to find a place to fish. I spent the day on a small southern tier trout stream and manged meager action in high water on a streamer. Very little insect activity.
